How to explore Kumamoto

Kumamoto is a castle city shaped by water, war, and recovery. Kumamoto Castle's black-and-white keeps and enormous stone walls still bear traces of the 2016 earthquakes, while the continuing restoration makes reconstruction a visible part of the visit rather than hiding it from view. The castle also anchors stories of Kato Kiyomasa and the Hosokawa domain.

Beyond the fortifications, abundant spring water feeds Suizenji Jojuen Garden and Lake Ezu. One Piece statues placed around the prefecture connect Kumamoto-born creator Eiichiro Oda's work with the region's recovery. Walking through the city brings feudal landscapes, everyday water culture, and modern resilience into the same story.
