Palazzo Medici Riccardi
Cosimo de' Medici transformed the Medici family from prominent bankers into the de facto rulers of Florence, and this palace was the physical headquarters of that transformation.
Cosimo deliberately chose a restrained architectural design — rejecting Brunelleschi's more ostentatious proposal — because overt displays of dominance would have been politically dangerous in a republic.
The interior courtyard — with its round arches, slender Corinthian columns, and antique gem medallions — was the true heart of the Medici residence, where business, politics, and culture all converged.
